What’s one way to make use of open space near a freeway? Volunteers from Freeway Estates Community Orchard have an answer: build an orchard. Freeway Estates Community Orchard is a group of friends and neighbors creating opportunities for more urban agriculture in north Seattle. They are building a 12,000 square foot orchard next to I-5, near the corner of NE 60th St and 6th Avenue NE, on public land owned by the Washington State Department of Transportation.

In August, community members gave their initial ideas for the public space. In September, local landscape architects will present three designs based on those ideas and collect public comments on the concepts. Meet at the orchard site on Saturday, September 28, 2013, from 10:00 a.m. to noon to give your input. The event will be held rain or shine. Lunch is provided. Kids welcome.
