Roosevelt residents don’t need to worry about missing out on this gem of a bookstore on their strolls toward U District from Cowen Park, thanks in part to the cheeky sign out front. While the snark might pull you in, most people linger in Nook and Cranny Books for the community they feel when walking through the doors. Owner Maren Comendant is usually found behind the counter, although she may also be spotted sitting down to join one of her three monthly recurring book clubs. Whether you are interested in non-fiction text with a social justice lens, translated texts from around the world, or to reminisce on books from your childhood, you can find lively conversation and laughter at the conference table in a cheery corner of the store.

This eclectic mix of genres is by design. While Maren originally dreamed up ideas for a more niche bookstore theme – her plan for a food themed bookstore/restaurant sounds absolutely mouthwatering – she ultimately chose to create a space that reflects what the neighborhood is interested in, using the community voice to help her stock her shelves. Brightly colored picture books, witchy tales, sleek journals, whimsical knicknacks, and enticing recipe books abound. Her intentional, community minded choices are clear. From the impressive collection of queer lit to the diverse representation of BIPOC authors and stories, Nook and Cranny Books is a welcoming space for all. Maren’s own interests are also represented in the mix, specifically in the large collection of translated works from around the world.
While Nook and Cranny Books might skirt just on the edge of the Roosevelt neighborhood boundaries, Maren herself lives in the heart of Roosevelt! She wants her neighbors to know that this space is our space. Nook and Cranny Books is more than a place to shop, it is a community space, a gathering space, and a reading space. In addition to the recurring book clubs, Nook and Cranny also hosts Open Mic Nights twice a month, Trivia Night once a month, and more! You can see the full schedule on the website or by following nookandcrannyseattle on Instagram or Nook and Cranny Books on Facebook. The space is also available for community members to host their own book clubs or events!
Don’t just walk on by, pop into the store at 5637 University Way NE Tuesday-Friday 11 AM – 6 PM, Saturday 10 AM – 6 PM, and Sunday 10 AM – 4 PM. Happy reading!
Maren hopes to see her neighbors at the store’s 4th Anniversary Party on Saturday, June 27th! Come celebrate the store’s newest addition; a Coffee Cart by Catalyst Coffee!
Each month, the Roosevelt Neighborhood Association’s Business of the Month recognizes a neighborhood business for their great service and community involvement. To learn more, please email contact@rooseveltseattle.org.
